Advertising vs Public Relations

Media Relations, Healthcare Public Relations, Entertainment PR firms, Healthcare Public Relations, Communication Agency are all necessary for the survival of a business.

Advertising and Public relations, they are both methods to promote and build awareness for brands and professionals. The main difference is the format and the way the message is delivered,  the goal they help you reach.

Advertising helps you build exposure whereas Public relations helps you build trust. As in advertising you simply pay a platform to share your message to a specific audience, which may or may not believe in it. On the other hand, to get PR you’ll need to convince the media you’re a reliable source in your industry and that your news fits into the narrative they create; once you’re past this threshold, the message circulated by the media in a way endorses your brand thanks to the existing relationship between the media and the audience.

Advertising leads sales, PR creates and supports institutional awareness and enhances company image. Advertising is more tactical, supporting a specific product, promotion or service while PR is more long range and is generally more strategically undertaken.

Therefore, Public Relations and advertising must be complementary. The stories used in PR must support the messages sent out via advertising and the advertising work should influence the PR.
